After ten years in the service of the Belgian state with the judicial brigade of the Brussels police, I moved to the United States for five years. There, I acquired an even more acute notion of law and order, the concept of family and individual freedoms.
Back in Belgium, I worked until my retirement in the crime investigation section of the European Commission’s Security Directorate.
I travelled to countries where human life does not carry the same weight as in the Western world. I’ve seen the best and the worst that human beings are capable of.
The way of life I fought for for so many years seems to have vanished like a mirage in the desert. The kind of people I worked with, brave men and women who didn’t hesitate to put their lives at risk to do their duty and save the lives of others, and who shared my interest in the values I cherish, seem to have vanished from the face of the earth.
People are still living with the after-effects of the fear of losing their lives instigated by the COVID psychosis, with a growing contempt for their fellow human beings, an individualism bordering on egocentricity, and a total abandonment of any sense of responsibility and duty towards others.
But let’s take a moment to meditate on the subject. The only certainty that every human being has from the first breath of air they take when they are born is that one day they will have to die, regardless of race, sex, wealth, education, etc., whether from natural causes, a bullet, a car accident, a health problem or just plain bad luck.
I’ve risked my life on several occasions. I know what fear is, but I’ve never given in to panic and I won’t accept living under a dictatorial, tyrannical regime, whether inspired by religious faith or political ideology.
Like most people, I love life, but for this very reason, I don’t want to spend it worrying about anything that might shorten it! I want to live free and make my own decisions about my health and the way I live my life. No one will ever force me to live under pressure and threat.
